It will be nothing like you expect. Our trip to Mongolia offers the chance for you to live amongst the nomads in the middle of the steppes, and see how the great nomads continue their legacy from the time of the Khans. From the majestic eagle hunters mounted on horseback to the humble herders in their gers, witness a unique harmony between man and animal as we explore their lands. In the heart of winter, where temperatures drop to -30 degrees celcius, way of life as you know it changes drastically, and the battle for survival is very real.
Day 1 – Ulaanbaatar
Welcome to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia! Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your guide and driver, and will proceed to the hotel for check in. Take some time to settle down and relax, after which we will take you on a city tour to locations like the Gandan monastery, Sukhbaatar Square, the National History museum and the Bogd Khaan Winter Palace museum so you can get a sense of the country. We will then have dinner and spend the night in the hotel.
Day 2 – Ulgii
We depart early in the morning for Ulgii by flight in a propeller plane. Home to the famous eagle hunters, Ulgii is located in the Altai region and is flanked by majestic snow-capped mountain ranges.
Upon arrival, you will be met with your driver and cook, and will be driven in private vehicles to Sagsai. You will stay overnight with the Kazakh family, and have the rare opportunity to be welcomed into their unique home.
Day 3 – Ulgii
We will spend the entire day shooting in Sagsai. The eagle hunters will don traditional garb of fur and leather, and demonstrate their hunting techniques on horseback. This is a rare opportunity to flex both your portraiture and wildlife photography skills, so be ready!
In winter, small ponds and river streams freeze over to form beautiful ice formations that look beautiful against the surrounding, barren lands. In the distance, mountains line the horizon and make for wonderful landscape photography. If we are lucky, we may spot other locals ice-fishing in the area.
In the evening, we will drive back to Ulgii and spend a night in a local hotel.
Day 4 – Ulaanbaatar- Hustai National Park
We depart back for Ulaanbaatar with a morning flight. Upon arrival, we will head directly to the Hustai National Park, located a 2-hour drive west of the capital. Here, we will watch a short documentary and visit the local museum. We will then drive deep into the park in search of the Przewalski horses, the ancestor of all modern-day horses (please bring an ultra-zoom lens if you have one). The park was in fact, set up in 1993 as a reserve for these horses!
We will spend the night in a ger, the traditional, round tents used by the nomads until this day. This will be a unique experience as it can be very cold at night, and the only heat source is from a manual heater! You will have the chance to try traditional Mongolian fare, cooked over fuel made of dried animal droppings.
Day 5 – Bayangobi
After a local breakfast, we will drive to Bayangobi and spend the day with a nomad family who are horse and camel breeders. Here, you will literally feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, with vast expanse of land surrounding the family’s camp. You will get the chance to photograph the daily life of these breeders, and will spend the night in one of their gers.
Day 6 – Ulaanbaatar
After an early breakfast, we will head to the sand dunes for a sunrise shoot. We will then begin the drive back to Ulaanbaatar, and check in to our hotel to freshen up and have lunch. After lunch, we will do some souvenir shopping and visit their many cashmere stores. Mongolia is famous for its incredibly luxurious and reasonably priced cashmere, so be sure to pick some up. We will have dinner and spend the night at the hotel.
Day 7 – Ulaanbaatar
On the last day, you are free to explore the city for street photography. The modern, gritty city contrasts greatly with the rest of Mongolia you have experienced, and will help slowly ease you back into city life. Her roads will be covered with snow, and streets bustling with locals going about their day. With their sharper features and wonderful fur coats, the locals make for beautiful portrait shots, but be sure to ask nicely.
You will then be picked up and taken to the airport for departure from Mongolia. This is the end of our expedition.
