PRELUDE
NORWAY

Lofoten Island

Norway is known for being a photographer’s paradise, mostly because of the great variety of landscapes that are bathed in the light of the midnight sun. During winter, the opportunity to capture unique landscapes dotted with mountains and fjords is what makes Norway such a hot spot for photographers. The islands are located above the arctic circle, and hence also provide some of the most spectacular seascapes in Europe.

UNUSUAL EXPEDITION’s  trips are well known for accomplishing a lot in just a few days. We basically pack a lot of content with different themes in a single trip. This workshop will be no different. Locations shoots each day are dependant on daily weather and lighting conditions.

Itinerary

DAY 1 – OSLO / LOFOTEN ISLAND
Welcome to the land of the Vikings! Upon arrival, you will be met at the arrival hall of the Oslo Airport and be taken straight to Lofoten via a short 2-hour domestic flight.

The Lofoten Islands has a strong connection to the Viking Age, home to one of the largest Viking longhouses ever found in the area. It’s not hard to imagine the ancient plunderers on this land; a raw wilderness of majestic mountains, deep fjords and long, surf-swept beaches. The region is also still known for its many fishing villages – the original trade of the Vikings.

When we arrive, we will set off to our hotel and get ready for our very first night chasing the Northern Lights.

DAY 2 to DAY 7 – LOFOTEN ISLAND

We will spend these 5 days exploring the area of Lofoten, visiting the villages of Reine, Leknes, Svolvær, and the surrounding countryside.

The cute, breathtaking village of Reine is located on the island of Moskenesøya, in the north of Lofoten. Red and white fishermen’s hut dot the shoreline and the surrounding peaks of granite shooting out of the Reinefjorden is the reason why the village has earned the reputation as the “most beautiful place in the world”. In the day, it hums of a tranquillity that can only be found in a village like Reine, while at night, the skies blaze with the startling energy of the Northern Lights (if the conditions are right), painting the night sky in beautiful hues of pink, green and purple.

Situated right in the middle of Lofoten is the village of Leknes, and is one of the few towns in Lofoten that does not depend on fishing or have a town centre by the sea. As such, it does not have the same traditional wooden architecture you might have gotten used to, but still boasts spectacular natural surroundings, of mountains, peaks, cliffs and long stretches of white sandy beaches. Utakleiv, Vareid and Unstad are three of the most famous beaches there: with Utakleiv featuring black wave-sculpted rocks and colourful rock-bound tide pools, Vareid a wonderful spot for seascape with the jagged mountains of Flakstad in the distance and Unstad with its impressive Arctic swells – you might even capture some surfers riding the waves.

Svolvær, located east of the archipelago is the unofficial capital and the largest city of of Lofoten. Home to one of North Norway’s most important artist communities, you will find many galleries where beautiful art of the islands’ unique light displayed. Svolvær is where you’ll also find one of Norway’s most spectacular maritime locations, the Trollfjorden. A dark narrow sheet of water that rests immediately below towering jagged peaks and awesome mountain walls, this fjord is roughly 100meters wide at the mouth and extends 2km inland. Weather permitting, we might even spot the rare white-tailed sea eagle.

DAY 8 – LOFOTEN ISLAND / OSLO
We rise early and prepare for check out, and to head back to Oslo, and hopefully we’ve managed to capture the Northern Lights! Upon arrival at Oslo, we will check in to our hotel, and you are free to explore the city for the rest of the day.

Oslo is one of Europe’s fastest-growing cities, with a population reaching 700,000 and new neighbourhoods that boast eye-catching architecture popping up almost by the minute – perfect for a spot of street photography. Norway’s capital is quickly transforming into a cosmopolitan hub with an abundance of world-class museums, restaurants, and art, while still maintaining the relaxed atmosphere of a much smaller town. You can easily explore the city on foot, bike or via its efficient public transport system.

DAY 9 – OSLO
