Patagonia Landscape and Wildlife Expedition

Patagonia lies tucked away right at the southernmost tip of the Americas. It is vast and empty, peaceful and quiet, a landscape that is wind-swept and barren. Patagonia boasts landscape you can only imagine, with beautiful vistas of rolling pastures and forests, mountains, glaciers and lakes. Many photographers have created tons of beautiful pictures in this magical land.

UNUSUAL EXPEDITION’s trips are well known for accomplishing a lot in just a few days. We basically pack a lot of content with different themes in a single trip. This workshop will be no different. Locations shoots each day are dependant on daily weather and lighting conditions.

What to Expect

Did you know that the name ‘Patagonia’ comes from the word ‘patagón’? It was used by explorer Magellan in 1520 to describe the natives who were thought to be giants, as they were taller than Europeans of the time.

Raw, wind-swept and awe-inspiring, Patagonia is a wonder of the world with its archetypal landscapes. The region is, for the most part, comprised of steppelike plains covered with an enormous bed of bare vegetation. In the hollows of the plains are ponds and lakes of fresh and brackish water, and towards the western Andes, one can find ice-fields and glaciers.  Its headlining acts – the Torres del Paine National Park and Perito Moreno glacier – are spectacular, but given the region’s varied topography, makes this sparsely-populated region a landscape photographer’s dream.

Itinerary

DAY 1 – PUNTA ARENAS
Welcome to Punta Arenas! Upon touchdown, you will be met at the arrival hall at the Punta Arenas airport, and be taken straight to your hotel via private vehicle. En route to the Patagonia Region, we will stop at selected spots for photo shoots.

Exact photography locations will depend on weather conditions, and the long daylight hours of summer

DAY 2-5 – TORRES DEL PAINE

Encompassing mountains, glaciers, lakes and rivers, the Torres del Paine National Park is one the 11 protected areas of the Magallanes Region and Chilean Antarctica. This bountiful park boasts spectacular scenery (especially during sunrise and sunset) and is rich in both flora and fauna.

Here, we will rise early in the morning to capture the magnificent sunrises that bathe the mountains in a golden glow, and turn waterfalls into cascading blankets of diamonds. Daily activities include tracking in order to photograph the pumas, and other animals that call the park home. You will also have the chance to spot foxes, guanacos, the Andean condor, black-chested buzzard-eagle, magellanic horned owl, Chilean flamingo and black-necked swans, just to name a few.

Another highlight of the park is the ‘baqueano’, which loosely translates to ‘cowboy’. Used to describe a person born in the countryside and connected to the work on ranches, these people are close to their horses, in a deeply rooted culture that go back to the late 19th century. Today, they maintain their customary way of life mostly by leading horseback riding tours in Patagonia, as they are known pathfinders. You will have the opportunity to see and capture them in action as we visit their stables, and out in the open, mounted on horseback.

Finally, we will take a cruise to pay a visit to the Perito Moreno glacier located in the Los Glaciares National Park, which was named after the explorer Francisco Moreno. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in Patagonia, and is one of the 48 glaciers ged by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field located in the Andes system shared with Chile. This ice field also happens to be the world’s third largest reserve of fresh water. Time and weather permitting, we might do a mini-trek on the glacier itself. Get your camera ready for some once-in-a-lifetime shots!
