South Pole Antarctica Photo Tour – Antarctic Peninsula

from $6,600

The first imagery that comes to mind is huge sheets of ice. In addition to that, the endless whiteness spread across the lands, surrounded by the blue of the ocean, filled with icebergs, and penguins. This stark beauty was earlier only accessible via ships. But with the recent developments, flying to Antarctica has become easy and has gained popularity because of number of reasons.

The flights to the King George Islands start from Punta Arenas in southern Patagonia. After arriving in Punta Arenas, passengers rest for a night before taking a chartered plane trip the next day to Antarctica, a journey that requires a mere 2 hours.

The plane lands in the Shetland Islands, which happens to be the most accessible area of Antarctica. It boasts grand natural beauty, and Antarctic wildlife such as penguins, whales, seals and many sea-birds endemic to this part of the world. The King George Island of South Shetland is the largest island in these part and is a hub for many research stations, and is also inhabited by a semi-permanent population of 500 people.

UNUSUAL EXPEDITION’s trips are well known for accomplishing a lot in just a few days. We basically pack a lot of content with different themes in a single trip. This workshop will be no different. Locations shoots each day are dependant on daily weather and lighting conditions.

We leave Punta Arenas airport for Antarctica! Within 2 hours of departure, we will disembark in King George Island and head to penguin and seal-rich Fildes Bay to explore the area. Fildes Bay has protected areas for penguins, the Cosmic Radiation laboratory (in Presidente Frei Base of the Chilean Air Force), and other military bases ran by other countries, such as China, Uruguay and Russia. Fun fact: Russian Bellingshausen Base is home to the Trinity Church.

We arrive in the South Shetland Islands, although our exact location and time of arrival hugely depends on the weather as in Antarctica, the environment can change drastically. Keep your camera ready, as this is the spot to see your first icebergs and of course, the lands of Antarctica! We will board a boat and sail in ice-filled bays, while enjoying the company of sea birds, penguins, seals and if we are lucky, whales.

We will also board a Zodiac and head towards shore for your first, memorable visit of a penguin colony. Our expedition will continue well into the evening, as daylight lasts for a long time in Antarctica.

Depend on weather conditions, your location and time of landing may varies. This will be the last landing in the morning, and you will set all ready to sail through the infamous Drake Passage en route to Ushuaia.

Today we cross in the infamous Drake Passage. The Drake Passage stretches for just under 1,000km and is the spot where the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Seas converge, creating a roaring current mix that might make balancing your drinks a little tricky!

What makes the Drake Passage so infamously rough is the fact that currents at this latitude meet no resistance from any landmass, anywhere on the planet. Coupled with the area’s propensity for high wind, a crossing of the Drake Passage can be quite the adventurous exploit.

As you sail through the Drake Passage en route to Ushuaia, attend an engaging program of lectures and presentations. In the company of expert guides, watch for wildlife from the glass-enclosed lounge or from the outside decks. You may spot magnificent sea birds, such as albatrosses and petrels, as well as different species of whales on their way to Argentina.
Meals: (B,L,D)

After an overnight crossing, you awake in full view of legendary Cape Horn! Cape Horn is a rocky headland on Hornos Island, in southern Chile’s Tierra del Fuego archipelago. It’s surrounded by wild seas off the southern tip of South America where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet. The albatross-shaped Cape Horn Monument commemorates the lives of thousands of seafarers who perished attempting to sail around the cape.

Weather permitting, we will board a Zodiac and be one of the few privileged adventurers to step foot on this famous and rarely visited island. We will then head back on board ship, and set sail towards Antarctica and cross the famous passage named in honour of Sir Francis Drake, the great 16th century British explorer. We will also sail along the Beagle Channel towards Puerto Williams, Chile, the southernmost town in the world. We’ll have the chance to explore the surroundings before setting sail to Ushuaia.
