ICELAND

Iceland’s most famous sights

Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields. Massive glaciers are protected in Vatnajökull and Snæfellsjökull national parks. Most of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavik, which runs on geothermal power and is home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history. Also known as the land of fire and ice, it is a country of sharp contrasts.

UNUSUAL EXPEDITION’s trips are well known for accomplishing a lot in just a few days. We basically pack a lot of content with different themes in a single trip. This workshop will be no different. Locations shoots each day are dependant on daily weather and lighting conditions.

What to Expect

In recent years, Iceland has become a popular travel destination for nature photographers. Whether you’re a landscape or wildlife photographer, there are many opportunities to capture some stunning scenery and amazing bird life. Winter is a magical time of the year in Iceland, and everything is in a different kind of bloom. The air is crisp, the trees are bare, and the green grass and soil are forcibly frozen together. The red berries that fall on the ground at the end of summer are glued to the frozen ground, covered in a thin layer of snow, and the little that is left of the patches of green grass is Mother Nature’s own Christmas decoration. If you are lucky, you will have the chance to see the awesome northern lights as they paint the sky in a myriad of colours. Magic is in the air!

Itinerary

DAY 1 – Reykjavik
Upon arrival, we will take our scheduled Flybus coach and make our way to Reykjavik City, and on to your hotel. We will check in at your comfortable hotel, and you will have the afternoon to explore Reykjavik on your own or take an optional tour.

Meals: (-)

DAY 2 – South Iceland
Today after breakfast, we head along the south coast and stop near the active volcano beneath the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier.

We will then stop at the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, which plunges over the mountain. There’s a trail that goes behind the falling water and offers interesting views, if you are prepared to get wet! Skógafoss Waterfall, 60 meters high and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country is also one of our destination. Tonight, we will stay at Vik.

Meals: (B,L,D)

DAY 3 – South Iceland
Early in the morning, we will spend some time capturing sights on the black sand beaches of Vik and the basalt sea stack, Reynisdrangar. Fun fact: it is believed that the stacks were trolls that turned into rocks when they were exposed to the sun’s rays.

We will also explore the Reynisfjara beach, long considered as the most beautiful non-tropical beach in the world. It offers a magnificent sea view with spiky stacks jutting out through the waves, lined with impressive cliffs and caves.

In the afternoon, we will make our way to the Skaftafell National Park, one of the must see destinations in Iceland. Skaftafell is a beautiful mountainous region in the south of Iceland on the southern edge of the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier. The old Skaftafell National park is nearly 5.000 km2 but is since 2008 the epicenter of the largest National Park in Europe, Vatnajökull National Park, covering 12.000 km2. The area is an amazing place to view the great contrasts between active volcanoes, mighty glaciers, powerful glacier rivers and endless flat sandy plains.

We will skirt the borders of the park until we reach the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon. Here, huge icebergs float and grind against each other in the still, deep waters of the lagoon, with the Vatnajökull Glacier in the distance creating a magnificent backdrop.

Meals: (B,L,D)

DAY 4 & 5 – South Iceland
Depending on weather, we will spend 2 nights at the lagoon and its surrounding. We will travel to Vestrahorn for some remote landscape picture or maybe visit an Icelandic Horse breeder. Enjoy the glacier lagoon area – taking pictures of the floating icebergs near the lagoon will be our daily activity, of course, not forgetting that we will also do a tour of the ice caves!

Meals: (B,L,D)

DAY 6 – Borgarnes
Early morning, we will prepare ourselves to check out and transfer to Borgarnes, one of the original settlement areas for the first Icelanders. It is a picturesque little town on a rocky peninsula that offers a great view in all directions. On a clear day, you can see not just one, but two glaciers, Snæfellsjökull and Eiríksjökull.

En route, we will also visit the Gullfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most popular attractions, and the Strokkur geyser, which erupts every 6-10 minutes. Get ready for some dramatic shots!

Meals: (B,L,D)

DAY 7 to 10 – Snæfellsness Peninsular
Early morning, we will prepare ourselves to check out and transfer to the Snæfellsness Peninsula. From sparkling fjords, dramatic volcano peaks, stunning sea cliffs, golden beaches to lava flow, you will have the chance to capture many of the iconic scenes you’ve seen of Iceland. Other sights include the Black Churc in Buðir, the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall and the small fishing village, Arnarstapi.

Meals: (B,L,D)

DAY 11 – Reykjavik
We will pack up and drive back to Reykjavik. Tonight, we will stay at Grindavík. This is a beautiful Icelandic fishing town on the south coast of the Reykjanes peninsula. After a long trip, we highly recommend taking a dip at the famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa before the long flight back home.

Meals: (B,L,D)

DAY 12 – Reykjavik
After breakfast, we will check out from the hotel and head to the airport, depending on the time of your return flight. This is the end of your expedition.
