Thousands of Buddhist devotees in Indonesia will gather to celebrate Waisak Lantern Festival in Borobudur together. A walking procession to Borobudur Temple follow by the night activities of chanting and praying. The highlight moment of this festival comes when thousands of lanterns are released in the night sky. We will guide you in our photo tour workshop to capture these beautiful moments.
An archipelago of over 17,000 islands of which only 6,000 are inhabited, Indonesia remains a destination that cannot be covered in one or two brief trips. There remains plenty of adventure in this diverse archipelago that lies within the Ring of Fire. Borobudur Temple in Indonesia is located on the island of Java. The magnificent Borobudur temple is the world’s biggest Buddhist monument, an ancient site widely considered to be one of the world’s seven wonders.

Upon arrival at Yogyakarta, you will be greeted at the airport and directly transferred to Solo (about 1 hours drive) for an overnight stay. We will spend the afternoon at nearby attractions until sunset.
We depart for the Kemuning tea plantation at around 4am for a sunrise shoot session. The plantation is managed by the PT. Agro Kemuning Tourism located in the Kemuning village, at a height of 1,540m above sea level. Located in an area that lies between the Sukuh Temple and Cetho Temple, the plantation offers spectacular natural mountainous views. You will be able to see not just miles of beautiful green, but also the tea pickers who labour in the refreshingly cool climate. They start work from dawn till dusk, carefully and patiently making their way through the plantation. It is a sight you will never be able to find in the city, and make for unique photo ops.
After this, we will make our way back to Solo, where we will be able to view lush rice terraces and locals going about their day. We will make a stop at a traditional gong maker, a Javanese musical instrument, before driving back to Borobodur for the Jatilan dance performance.
Waisak Day celebrates the life, death, and enlightenment of Buddha. The celebration attract pilgrims from all over the world to this heritage site. The buddhist monks and local devouts will pray and meditate in the temples. Follow by a procession along the road, as the buddhist monks and local devouts will march from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple in daytime. In the night, one of the most magnificent moments on Waisak Day is the release of sky lanterns that symbolizes enlightenment.
We rise early, and make our way to the Semtubu hill at around 4.30am for a sunrise shoot of the sprawling temple complex. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple, and is the world’s largest Buddhist temple, one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world.
After our morning session, we will visit some local handicraft makers around the area for some street photography, before heading back to Yogyakarta. We may stop at some local markets for photo shoots along the way, time permitting. After this, we will head to the Prambanan Hindu temple complex for a sunset photography session.
You are free to explore the area in the morning on your own until it is time to head for the airport. This is the end of our photo tour.
