Tour Itinerary

Day 1 | Singapore | Siem Reap | Arrival & Angkor Wat Sunset

Our Cambodia Angkor photo tour starts with the short flight from Singapore to Siem Reap and goes straight to work. After meeting the local team and dropping bags, we buy the three day Angkor pass late in the afternoon, which is a deliberate piece of planning: passes bought after a certain hour admit you free for that evening and only begin counting from the following day. That gives us a bonus sunset at Angkor Wat on arrival, shot from the moat and the reflection pools on the west side as the towers turn from grey to gold. Dinner in Siem Reap follows, along with a briefing on the sunrise starts, the model and monk sessions, and the two long range days to come.

Day 2 | Angkor Wat Sunrise & Angkor Thom Temples | Models & Monks

The classic Angkor Wat sunrise is the reason most people book an Angkor Wat photography tour, and we are at the gate for opening to secure a reflection pool position before the crowd builds. As the sky lightens the five towers appear twice, once above the causeway and once in the water. The rest of the day is spent among the temples of Angkor Thom with two models in traditional Apsara dress and two monks in saffron robes accompanying the group, which transforms what is otherwise an architecture shoot: the face towers of the Bayon, the causeway of the south gate and the Terrace of the Elephants all gain a subject and a sense of scale. In the afternoon we move to Ta Prohm and quieter Banteay Kdei.

Day 3 | Angkor Wat Sunrise & Koh Ker Pyramid Temple | Models & Monks

A second sunrise at Angkor Wat lets you change position and treatment now that you know how the light arrives, working the northern pool or the inner causeway instead. Then we drive north for the long range day of this Cambodia Angkor photo tour, out to Koh Ker, capital of the empire for a brief period in the tenth century and still half swallowed by forest. The seven tier pyramid of Prasat Thom is unlike anything at Angkor itself, and the models and monks travel with us, so the pyramid and the tree wrapped ruins of Prasat Pram both get a figure in the frame. On the return we stop at Beng Mealea, a collapsed sandstone temple left largely as the jungle found it.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 | Tonle Sap | Kompong Khleang Stilted Village & Angkor Wat Sunset

We change subject entirely today and drive out to Kompong Khleang on the Tonle Sap, a stilted village where the houses stand on legs up to ten metres tall. Early May is the end of the dry season, so the water is low and the stilts are fully exposed, which is the most photogenic time of year to see it. A community boat takes us through the village channels and out onto the lake for daily life, boat traffic and environmental portraits. We return in time for a final sunset at Angkor Wat, the third day of the pass, and a farewell dinner in town closes the shooting on this Siem Reap photography itinerary.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 | Siem Reap | Singapore

A relaxed final morning, with time to back up cards and repack, then the transfer to Siem Reap Angkor International Airport and the flight home to Singapore. In five days this Cambodia Angkor photo tour has covered three Angkor Wat sunrises and sunsets, the temples of Angkor Thom, the jungle ruins of Ta Prohm and Beng Mealea, the tenth century pyramid at Koh Ker and a stilted village on the Tonle Sap, with models and monks arranged throughout so that the temple frames carry people rather than only stone.
