Tour Itinerary

Day 1 | Beijing | Wulan Butong Xiang Area

Our Inner Mongolia winter horses photography tour gathers in Beijing in the early morning, where joining participants land and continuing customers from the owl tour rejoin the group. From there it is a long drive north onto the Wulan Butong grassland, climbing out of the North China plain and into open country where the snow lies unbroken to the horizon and herds outnumber buildings. We break for rest and meals along the way, and arrive with enough daylight to check in, prepare equipment and talk through the sessions ahead. Everything on this trip runs on the same principle: the horses are worked in the best light of the day, and the middle hours are for warming up and reviewing.

Day 2 | Wulan Butong Xiang Area

The first full day on the snowy plains is the one most people picture when they think of an Inner Mongolia winter tour. Herds are driven across open snow at speed, and the combination of flying powder, frozen breath and low backlight is what makes this subject unlike any other horse photography. We work it methodically: fast shutter speeds for frozen action, then deliberate panning for motion blur, then low angles from the snow line so the animals fill the frame against sky. In the afternoon we move to flocks of sheep and camel caravans, which give calmer compositions, strong silhouettes and portraits of herders in traditional dress.

Day 3 | Wulan Butong Xiang Area

A second full day with the horses is where technique starts to compound. Now that you know the run, you can plan for it: choose a focal length before the herd sets off, decide whether you want the whole group or a single animal, and commit to either a frozen frame or a long panned blur rather than hedging. We also work portraits of the horses themselves and of their handlers, whose fur hats, sashes and weathered faces are as much a part of this China winter photography tour as the animals. Afternoon sessions again bring in sheep and camels, arranged into leading lines across the snow.

Day 4 | Wulan Butong Xiang Area

By the third day the strongest set ups are repeated under different light, and the aim shifts from getting the shot to getting the better version of it: cleaner backgrounds, a tighter group, a herder placed exactly where you want him. This is also where storytelling frames come together, combining animals, people and the frozen landscape into a single image rather than three separate ones. After an early dinner we close with a fireworks session over the snow, an evening set piece where the light on the ground and the burst above it have to be balanced deliberately.

Day 5 | Wulan Butong Xiang Area

An extra day on the grassland is built into this Inner Mongolia winter horses photography tour on purpose. Weather on the Wulan Butong plateau does not negotiate, and a spare day means a blizzard or a flat grey morning costs you nothing. If conditions are good it becomes a free day to chase whatever you still want: horses, sheep, camels, herders or pure winter landscape, with the guides splitting the group by interest rather than keeping everyone together. Evenings are for backing up, reviewing and repacking before the long drive south.

Day 6 | Wulan Butong | Beijing

We check out after breakfast for the return drive to Beijing, with rest and meal stops along the way and a planned evening arrival at the airport. The drive is long and there is no margin built into it, so departure is on time rather than negotiable. For most participants this closes a fortnight of China winter photography that began with owls and foxes on the Hulunbuir grassland and finished with horses, camels and herders at Wulan Butong.

Day 7 | Beijing | Singapore

Arrival in Singapore in the early morning brings the Inner Mongolia winter horses photography tour to a close. Between the grassland sessions, the pastoral work and the flexibility of a spare day, most photographers come home with a body of winter images that would take several independent trips to assemble, shot in conditions that reward preparation and a guide who knows exactly where the herds will run.
