Day 1 | Singapore | Beijing | Hailar

Our Inner Mongolia winter owl photography tour begins with the morning flight from Singapore to Beijing and a same day connection north to Hailar, the gateway city of the Hulunbuir grassland. Arrival is late and dark, and outside the terminal the temperature is a serious step down from anything most visitors have felt, so warm layers belong in your hand baggage rather than the hold. The local team meets the flight and takes us to the hotel for dinner, followed by a briefing that matters more on this trip than most: how to dress for long static sessions, how to keep batteries alive, how to avoid condensation when a cold camera meets a warm room, and how the group will approach the owls and foxes without pushing them.

Day 2 | Hailar | Hulunbuir

The first full day is given to the two birds that define this China winter wildlife photography trip: the great grey owl and the snowy owl. Both are birds of the far north, and Hulunbuir in January puts them against clean snow and bare birch rather than the cluttered backgrounds you get further south. Sessions follow the light rather than the clock. We work portraits and perched frames while the sun is low, then concentrate on flight: take off, the glide, the strike into snow and the open wing landing, which is the frame most people come for. Long lenses, high shutter speeds and a monopod or beanbag earn their place today, and the guides position the group so the light and the wind are both behind us.

Day 3 | Hailar | Hulunbuir

A second day on the grassland extends the owl work and adds the red foxes, which are the other reason photographers book an Inner Mongolia winter tour. Foxes give you something the owls do not: movement across open snow at a pace you can follow, and behaviour that reads clearly in a frame, whether that is a fox trotting a ridge line, listening for prey beneath the crust, or pausing to look straight down the lens. We shoot both tight portraits with compressed backgrounds and wider environmental frames that place the animal in the vastness of Hulunbuir. The schedule stays deliberately flexible, following the animals and whichever light is working.

Day 4 | Hailar | Beijing

The final morning and afternoon return to whichever subject you most want to improve on, which is the advantage of a small group on a China winter wildlife photography tour: the guides can take three people back to the great grey owl for one more flight sequence rather than moving everyone on a fixed schedule. After an early dinner we transfer to Hailar airport for the late flight to Beijing and the onward connection.
