Day 1 | Guiyang | Yinzhai Village | Zhenyuan

Our Guizhou blossom photography tour begins in Guiyang and heads east on the same afternoon. The first stop is Yinzhai village in Guiding county, a settlement of tiled roofs and old timber houses set among fields that turn green and gold in early spring, and a gentle introduction to the rural Guizhou photography that runs through the whole route. We continue to Zhenyuan, an ancient town wrapped in a tight bend of the Wuyang river, arriving in time for the evening. Day 2 | Zhenyuan | Xijiang

Morning in Zhenyuan is worked on foot: the famous river bend from the bridges, the stepped lanes of the old town, the boat landings and the layered rooflines above the water. Then we cross into the Miao heartland for Xijiang Qianhu, the largest Miao village in China, where more than a thousand timber houses climb the hillsides on either side of a narrow valley. Afternoon light picks out the stilted structures and the terraces behind them, and after dinner the whole hillside lights up, one of the defining images of any Guizhou photography tour. Day 3 | Xijiang | Zhaoxing

Xijiang at first light is a quieter subject than the night view: mist gathers in the valley, cooking smoke rises through the timber roofs and the village wakes without an audience. After breakfast we drive southeast to Zhaoxing, one of the largest Dong settlements in Guizhou, a village of five clans each with its own drum tower. The Dong build in timber without nails, and the drum towers and covered wind and rain bridges are the finest vernacular architecture on this Guizhou blossom photography tour. Day 4 | Zhaoxing

A full day in and around Zhaoxing, which is the point at which most photographers stop shooting landmarks and start shooting village life. We begin with the drum towers in morning mist, then climb to Tang An, a hillside Dong village looking out over rice terraces that hold water like a staircase of mirrors in spring. The afternoon returns to Zhaoxing for the lanes: timber joinery, embroidery on a doorstep, ducks on the stream, elders on the bridge benches. We close with golden hour over the surrounding fields. Day 5 | Zhaoxing | Basha | Libo

We leave Zhaoxing early for Basha, a Miao village near Congjiang known for keeping customs that disappeared elsewhere: men still carry a hunting gun and wear their hair in a topknot shaved with a sickle. We time the visit for the morning performance and stay on afterwards for portraits, timber houses, grain stores and village life without the stage. It is one of the strongest cultural sessions on the Guizhou blossom photography tour and the frames tend to be tight and character led rather than scenic. After lunch in Congjiang we drive west to Libo, changing provinceside from Dong and Miao country to karst.

Day 6 | Libo | Xiaoqikong

A full day at Xiaoqikong, the small seven arch scenic area, and one of the most photogenic karst landscapes in southern China. A single valley holds turquoise pools, forest cascades, travertine steps and a slender stone bridge built in the Qing dynasty, all linked by walkways so you can work steadily rather than hike hard. Bring a tripod, a polariser and a neutral density filter: the water here is made for long exposures, and the mixed forest light rewards patience. Day 7 | Libo | Huangguoshu

Today is the long westward transfer from Libo to Huangguoshu, crossing the karst plateau of central Guizhou with a break for lunch. Positioning days are part of the arithmetic of a province this large, and we use the time to back up cards, review the first half of the Guizhou blossom photography tour and talk through what to change in the second. If we arrive with light in hand there is a scouting session around Huangguoshu, walking the viewpoints and deciding where each person wants to stand in the morning, when the waterfall is at its best and the walkways are still empty.

Day 8 | Huangguoshu | Puding Shuijing | Wanfenglin

Huangguoshu is the largest waterfall in Asia and we photograph it in the morning, before the tour groups arrive and while the spray still hangs in the gorge. The main drop can be worked from the front viewpoints, from below and from the cave behind the curtain, so the hour is more about choosing a treatment than finding the subject. Afterwards we continue west, stopping at Puding Shuijing village for spring fields and unhurried rural frames, and reach the Wanfenglin karst basin by evening. Day 9 | Wanfenglin | Malinghe | Fenglin Buyi

A full day among the karst peaks of Wanfenglin, where several thousand conical hills rise straight out of a flat farmed basin. Sunrise from the upper viewpoints is the signature frame: mist in the fields, geometric plots of rape and rice, and villages tucked between the peaks. Later we photograph Malinghe gorge, a deep canyon lined with waterfalls that fall directly onto the walkways, then the Buyi cultural landscape at Fenglin Buyi, where stone houses sit hard against the hills. Day 10 | Wanfenglin | Baili Dujuan

A last morning in Wanfenglin, working the peaks and the field patterns from whichever viewpoint delivered best over the previous day. Then the longest transfer of the trip, north across the province to the Baili Dujuan area near Bijie, where the rhododendron forest covers more than a hundred kilometres of ridge. Arriving the night before matters: the blossom is at its best in early light with mist still in the valleys, and staying nearby means we are in position rather than driving at dawn. It is the payoff the whole Guizhou blossom photography tour has been building towards.

Day 11 | Baili Dujuan | Guiyang

Baili Dujuan means a hundred li of rhododendron, and in early April the slopes carry blocks of red, pink and white across the ridgelines. We photograph the blossom in the morning, working wide layered landscapes with mist between the hills, mid range compositions where a path or a stone wall runs through the flowers, and close detail of the blooms themselves. Bring a longer lens for compressing the ridges. After lunch we return to Guiyang, and a farewell dinner closes the Guizhou photography with a card full of villages, waterfalls, karst peaks and flowers.

Day 12 | Guiyang

Free time in Guiyang depending on flight schedules, then the airport transfer and the end of the tour. Over twelve days this Guizhou blossom photography tour has crossed the province twice, from the riverside old town of Zhenyuan and the Miao and Dong villages of the southeast, through the karst water of Libo and the largest waterfall in Asia, to the peak forest of Wanfenglin and the rhododendron ridges of Baili Dujuan. It is a route that suits photographers who want culture and landscape in the same trip rather than choosing between them.
